The reconstruction of the Mauripur Road from Gulbai to area’s truck stand has been started at an estimated cost of Rs 70 million, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Roshan Ali Shaikh said on Sunday.
“The reconstruction work is aimed at making this important road a quality thoroughfare of the city,” the DCO said while visiting the Mauripur Road along with Executive District Officer Works and Services Altaf G Memon, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Managing Director Misbahuddin Farid, office-bearers of the Karachi Goods Carriers Association and officers and engineers concerned.
“This important corridor of city will be constructed according to international standards as this road is used by the armed forces and heavy goods carriers besides citizens visiting the seaside,” he added. He said that the Mauripur Road beyond Gulbai has been closed for traffic since Saturday midnight and requested commuters to use an alternative route. The DCO ordered removal of encroachments along the Mauripur Road with the help of police, and also directed lodging of FIRs against people who set them up.
During a briefing by the officers concerned, the DCO was informed that the KWSB installed 12- and 24-inch diameter water pipelines under the Mauripur Road and water has been continuously leaking from them for the last three years. He was also told that a proper sewerage system does not exist in the area and the factories located there dispose of water material on the road.
The DCO directed the KWSB to immediately repair the water supply lines passing under the road. He also directed the Works and Services Department to contact the Pakistan Railways and request it to cancel the lease of land along the road being used for weighbridges as they was cause traffic gridlocks in the area.
