The issuance of unverified subscriber identity modules (SIMs) is major hurdle in investigation of criminal cases, pointed out participants of a Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) meeting. According to a statement issued on Sunday, the meeting was presided over by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan at the Governor’s House.
“Over 90 percent of crimes are committed through mobile phones but it becomes difficult to trace the culprits due to the lack of sophisticated equipment and computer software,” it was observed. CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy, Federal Petroleum Minister Dr Asim Hussain, Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, prominent businessmen, Barrister Farogh Nasim, Fatima Suriya Bajiya and senior police officers of Karachi attended the meeting.
The governor said that despite resource constraints, the CPLC’s performance is satisfactory as far as cases of kidnapping for ransom are concerned. It was decided that with the assistance of the private sector, the budgetary problems of CPLC would be resolved by the provincial government. The participants of the meeting also stressed the need for further modernising the CPLC and equipping it to tackle criminal cases.
On the occasion, the governor also directed enhanced coordination between the officials of the emergency control centre of the City District Government Karachi and the police headquarters.
