The city doctors slammed police on Saturday for registering a ‘false’ case against their three colleagues working at the Sheikh Zayed Hospital. The case was lodged against the doctor’s alleged criminal negligence, which had caused the death of an under-treatment patient.
The doctors from the hospital and members of the Pakistan Medical Association condemned the police action and warned that they would stage a protest if police failed to withdraw the case. In a meeting of the PMA held here at the Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Punjab PMA President Dr Ashraf Nizami said that after the promulgation of Health Care Commission Act, such cases could not be filed against doctors.
The doctors present in meeting said a strong protest would be launched if the FIR was not cancelled. A spokesperson for the Sheikh Zayed Hospital said it was not true that, Raffique Ijaz, the patient, had died due to the negligence of doctors. According to hospital sources, the patient was suffering from multiple diseases and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.
“The patient went through three surgeries with the consent of his relatives and was on ventilator”, the spokesman added. He said the patient was being given the best possible treatment and his heirs were kept aware about his deteriorating condition. A media report said that a lawyer, Raffique Ijaz, 30, was receiving treatment at the hospital for some intestine cancer since 15 October.
After his death in the hospital, Shabbir Hussain, the father of the deceased, lodged an FIR with the Muslim Town police against three doctors for their alleged criminal negligence during the treatment of the patient.
