The social networking websites such as Facebook have become virtual forum for hot political debate between the supporters of Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Although the PTI’s presence is much more evident because if its popularity among youngsters and particularly among females, the PML N supporters also trying hard to make their presence felt.
The PTI’s official facebook pages are filled with messages inviting visitors to attend the PTI’s rally being held in Lahore today. Meanwhile, different polls are also held about the rallies of the two parties. According to Pakistan Today’s poll on facebook, 269 people said the PTI would be able to gather more people whereas only 82 people said he won’t.
The country’s youth is also inviting people for their maximum participation in the party’s even. With an increase in the political temperature, the significance of the social media is seeing a boost. Twitter updates, facebook statuses, videos and pictures with political messages have made it an ever-raging cyber-political war. The PTI is using songs with political themes to garner maximum support.
Music might be the key tool of the PTI’s politics as many bands including Strings are expected to perform in today’s procession at the ground of Minar-e-Pakistan. The PML-N, on the other hand seems to losing cyberspace to the PTI since the Facebook has only one page unofficial page entitled “We Love Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and PML-N”. The PML-N supporters are continuously using Facebook to malign Imran Khan and the ruling Pakistan People’s Party.
They are sharing news items and cartoons in favour of their leadership. On Friday, the day the PML-N staged a big show at the Bhati Gate, the party’s supporters wrote on their page: “All parties including the PPP, Q-League, MQM and PTI are just doing a noora kushti (faking their antagonism towards each other) while covertly supporting each other against the PML-N. All the parties are protecting the PPP against the PML-N and PTI’s rally was in fact in favour of President Zardari and against the PML-N.”
A PTI social media manager told Pakistan Today that his party was giving special attention to that media in order to attract the youth towards the PTI’s politics. “The PTI with its students’ wing Insaf Students Federation has arranged the live streaming of the Sunday’s event on the internet,” he added.
