    Southwark Crown Court
The jury is out on Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif. Mohammad Amir and their agent (for all three cricketers) Mazhar Majeed have already pleaded guilty as charged. If Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif are convicted they are likely to get longer custodial (prison) sentences, between 2 to 7 years. Mohammad Asif and Mazhar Majeed who have already confessed to the crime they have committed i.e. pleaded guilty are likely to receive relatively lesser/milder sentences.

Jury’s (jury is a group of common individuals, men and women) job is to determine whether the accused are guilty as charged i.e. if they have actually committed the crime.

Whereas the guilt is decided by the jury the sentencing is left to the judge. There are a number of issues considered by the judge before sentencing. There is a principle of proportionality in sentencing. The sentence given is proportional to the crime committed by the individual.

Irrespective of its outcome, the court case being concluded in Southwark Crown Court will prove to be a watershed for Pakistan cricket.
