FIA DG doesn’t bother about SC notice

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Tehsin Anwar Ali Shah has left the country despite being on notice to appear in the Supreme Court in the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam case on November 2. Shah left for Hanoi, Vietnam late on Friday to attend the 80th Interpol General Assembly being held from October 31 to November 3.
The General Assembly is composed of delegates appointed by the governments of member countries. As Interpol’s supreme governing body, it meets once a year and takes all the major decisions affecting general policy, the resources needed for international cooperation, working methods, finances and programmes of activities. Sources said Shah left Friday through a Bangkok-bound Thai Airlines flight, TG-346.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was informed during the hearing of NICL scam on Tuesday that the FIA DG and the interior secretary had created hurdles in the investigation process of the NICL scam which favoured the main accused, Moonis Elahi. Zafar Qureshi, former FIA additional director general and chief investigation officer probing the NICL scam had accused Shah, Interior Secretary Khawaja Siddique Akbar and some other FIA officials of created hurdles in the investigation, leading to Moonis’ acquittal.
Upon this, the court issued notices to Akbar, Shah, FIA Lahore director who is currently heading the investigation, and FIA assistant director (legal) to appear before the court on November 2 and explain why the court’s orders were not implemented in letter and spirit.
