The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Minorities Wing took the lead on all other factions of the party to make its protest rally against the government a spectacular show by participating in the highest numbers.
The PML-N Minorities Wing workers far outnumbered the Kisaan Wing, Lawyers Wing and other groups of the party. A massive crowd belonging to minority religions, most of them Christians led by Punjab Finance Minister Kamran Michael, joined the rally at the onset. All the markets of the city were closed for the rally and business activities were suspended to make way for the PML-N power show at the heart of the provincial capital.
The trade unions of the markets put up notices at many places requesting traders to close their shops for the duration of the rally. As most trade unionists are aligned with the PML-N, the party enjoyed full cooperation from the traders. Banks in the area and their ATMs were also closed before the rally.
Meanwhile, vendors had a field day at the rally, where they earned handsomely selling snacks, political badges, flags and toys. These vendors were perhaps even more enthusiastic than most of the political workers. The dry weather on Friday ensured that their kulfi, nimko and juices sold like hot cakes at the rally. Some convenience store owners who dared to keep their shops open were amply rewarded for their nerve, as the rally was more of a picnic than a political protest to oust the government.
Over 40,000 people participated in the rally, which began after Friday prayers and climaxed near the evening. People were carrying placards, banners and flags inscribed with anti-government slogans, especially focusing on President Asif Ali Zardari. The crowd danced to the beat of the dhol and shouted slogans against Zardari. The rally’s path was brightly lit and generators were brought in to run the vast amount of lights. Loud sound systems installed at the rally played upbeat tunes to keep the participants riled up. An estimated Rs 40 million to Rs 50 million was spent on staging the rally.
