Aurat Foundation, under the Legislative Watch Programme for Women Empowerment, paid tribute to former Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairperson and mother of democracy Nusrat Bhutto for her services and contributions to women issues in Pakistan and arranged a candle-light vigil in her memory at Charing Cross. PPP Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Faiza Malik, Aurat Foundation Resident Director Nasreen Zehra, Mumtaz Mughal and other attended the event. Nusrat represented Pakistan at the First UN Women World Conference held in 1975 at Mexico and urged the global community for affirmative measures for women’s empowerment. The UN declared the Decade of Women from 1975-1985, during which a new of women’s movement spread across the world. Ironically, Nusrat attended the first women’s world conference and former PM Benazir Bhutto represented the Fourth UN Women World conference at Beijing in 1995, so far the last such conference. Separately, PPP workers held a Quran khawani to pray for the departed soul of Nusrat. A ceremony was held at the PPP Punjab Secretariat where PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, General Secretary Samiullah Khan and others participated.
