Chief Justice Azad Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Mustafa Mughal was rushed to hospital with a gunshot injury after being shot in Muzaffarabad, police said.
Ghulam Mustafa Mughal was taking an evening walk at a university recreation ground when someone lurking in the bushes shot him once in the abdomen.
“He was on his evening walk on the university campus. Someone hiding in the bushes opened fire on him. He received one bullet in his abdomen,” police official Riaz Abbasi told AFP by telephone.
Mughal, the chief judge at the high court, was rushed to military hospital in Muzaffarabad, where doctors said he was conscious and would be operated upon. His life was not thought to be in danger.
Police said the motive for the attack was unclear.
“At the moment, we cannot say whether it’s terrorism or some type of enmity. We have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation,” said Abbasi.
Senior minister Chaudhry Yasin told media that the shooting was under investigation.
Police said Mughal left his driver and guard outside the recreation ground where he began his evening walk.
It was not immediately clear whether Mughal had been threatened.
