The political atmosphere again heated up in the province when Punjab Governor Latif Khosa said on Saturday that he thinking about asking Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take a vote of confidence from the Punjab Assembly (PA).
He was talking to journalists at the Lahore Gymkhana after a prize distribution ceremony. Khosa said that he was seriously thinking that Shahbaz did not even have a simple majority and might be asked to take a vote of confidence from the assembly but no decision was made in this regard. The governor said, “Constitutionally Shahbaz Sharif is not a member of the provincial assembly and how could he be the CM of the province”. He said that when unconstitutional acts were happening in Punjab, he had the right to ask the Punjab government about that.
The governor said that Shahbaz’s disqualification case was pending in court and political parties were looking towards it. Khosa said that students were protesting on roads against mismanagement in Intermediate results and he had never seen in his entire life that thousands of results were cancelled and this all speaks of the bad governance in Punjab, as the CM lacked vision and policies and bad policies were ruining the education system in Punjab.
The governor said that Punjab had one man show and dictatorship in disguise of democracy. He said that incidents of ransom, abductions and daylight murders were increasing in Punjab and lawlessness was prevailing. Khosa said that former Punjab governor’s Salmaan Taseer’s son Shahbaz Taseer had been abducted and nothing was done by the Punjab government. The governor said that lady health workers and students were on roads and warned that if governance was not improved and one man show not ended, he would think about taking action. Khosa said that the rulers in Punjab were spreading panic among the masses and only lip service was being done.
Earlier, talking to a delegation of the People’s Lawyers Forum led by General Secretary Sheikh Talat Mehmood Kakazai at the Governor’s House, Khosa said that restoration of the judiciary was the result of the struggle and sacrifices rendered by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), civil society and the media. He said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) movement against President Asif Ali Zardari was an insult to parliament, the four provinces and the people of Pakistan. Khosa said that those people who did not understand the “ABC of democracy” were trying to teach the PPP lessons of democracy. He said that PPP leaders had given their blood for restoration of democracy in the country and would continue to fulfill former PM and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s mission of serving the people of Pakistan.
As per Constitution, Shahbaz Sharif is not even a Member of Punjab Assembly. PPP seems to be quite due to political considerations. At least, the Chief Justice of Pakistan should take notice of this gross violation of Constitution. Perhaps, when it comes to Sharif family, his position is very compromised.
Since Mr. Rana Sanaullah is first cousin of our Chief Justice so don't expect any initiation of cases against the Sharifs.
