The healthy sport of cycling is becoming a necessity, especially for the marginalised and low income group as it is an appropriate way to curtail expenses. In past, it was used to a good practice to keep healthy but due to the rapid increase in petroleum prices, people, and especially youngsters, are moving towards cycling for transportation purposes. “It is not only a healthy activity but also solves major issue of transportation especially during Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) weekly holidays,” said Akhtar Munir, a resident of I-9. He said he used to come to office by local transport but had to face lot of difficulties due to traffic jam and other problems.
“Now I use bicycle and enjoy my journey without any hassle,” he added.
Asif Khan, a carpenter by profession, said he worked at the Karachi Company and used to travel on his motorbike but the raising prices of petrol had increased the transportation expenses which made it hard to fulfil requirements of his family. Eventually, he said, with consultation of his friends he sold his motorcycle and bought a cycle which has changed his lifestyle. A health expert Shahid Zaman, while talking to APP on Sunday, said one of the most important environmental benefits of bicycling was a decrease in global warming.
