Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Saturday approved the posting of Aftab Sultan as the Intelligence Bureau director general, appointing Wajid Ali Durrani the inspector general of the National Highway and Motorway Police. The decisions was in contrast to media speculations about the appointment of Durrani as the IB director general.
Sultan is considered to be one of the most honest, professional and dedicated officers of the police department. During his service tenure, he got training of administration of criminal justice from Japan International Cooperation Agency. On August 3, he was promoted to Grade 22 from his previous posting as additional inspector general of Punjab Police’s finance and welfare department.
A source said Durrani’s retirement was due in July and this had been a major reason for dropping his name, as the PM wanted a competent officer to head the IB. “Since the chiefs of Military Intelligence (MI) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) practically report to the army chief, the prime minister wanted an upright, dedicated and honest officer to be appointed as the IB director general keeping in view the future political developments, including Senate elections and PML-N’s ‘Go Zardari Go’ campaign due in the next fortnight,” a source close to prime minister said.
He added that the prime minister was unhappy with the poor performance of Durrani in maintenance of law and order in Sindh.
