The talented youngster of Royal Palm Golf Club soared high through a pretty looking score of par 72, at the end of the first round of the three rounds.
Al Baraka Bank sponsored the 30th Punjab Amateur Golf Championship at the historic Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course. With the competition rather sharp and nerve-wrecking M. Rehman applied his skills and golfing ability with the greatest of ease and never tried to play beyond himself, thereby leaving 82 contestants behind looking all set for some wonderful showing, as the championship moves into the second day. All set to displace Rehman are at least four contestants who may not be occupying the top slot but they are highly rated and not too far behind the leader. In fact Sardar Murad of Gymkhana is just one stroke in arrears and Wazir Ali and Mohsin Anwer of the host club are two strokes away. Other competitors who deserve a mention here are Raheel Ikram of Gujranwala at a score of 75, Imran Ahmed at 76 and Khalid Mehmood also at 76.
While there are other highly rated competitors like Mubraiz Ahmed, Omer Salamat and Sameer Iftikhar in the field, the struggle for the title is likely to revolve around the top six names. And the golf captain of the Gymkhana Golf Amer Mehmood said, “The fast paced greens will be the undoing of many seeking glory in this championship.”
As for M. Rehman, he admitted: “I must do well in this event and to do so, I must ask myself to be consistent, as this has been a weak link in my golfing career. But obviously enough is enough and I must reflect confidence on every shot in the remaining two rounds”. Sardar Murad is another one seeking this title and he stated: “The fairways are in great condition and the speed on the greens is to my liking, so I feel the adrenalin flowing and the creepy feeling far, far, away”. In the net section Asim Bucha is much ahead of the other double digit handicappers, his score of net 63 causing ripples of envy amongst his challengers. The ladies and seniors also enter this Al Baraka Bank sponsored event today.
