Educational activities came to a halt at the University of Karachi (KU) on Friday following a clash between two worker unions of the university. The vice chancellor has also banned the entry of unauthorised personnel in four “sensitive” departments of the university. The clash took place allegedly over new appointments and changes on ethnic basis. The members of the United Group along with their supporters of the People’s Student Federation attacked the members of the Insaf Group. Two people were injured in the clash and shifted to a private hospital.
Later, the members of the Insaf Group staged a protest, suspending educational activities at the university. The members announced that they will not perform their duties until the administration of the university provides them with security. The vice chancellor of the university, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui ordered an inquiry into the clash and issued a notification about imposing a ban on the entry of unauthorised personnel in four departments of the university – the Examination Department, the Registration Section, the Admission Section and the Administration Block. The spokesman for the university, Qamar Rizvi told Pakistan Today that these departments are sensitive and that is why the step has been taken. “An inquiry would be conducted and action will be taken against those responsible for causing trouble,” he added.
