Why haven’t heirs of missing persons been compensated so far, SC grills interior secretary

A three-member Supreme Court bench on Friday grilled Interior Secretary Khawaja Siddique Akbar for not paying compensation amount to legal heirs of missing persons despite repeated orders of the court.
The bench of Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali directed the interior secretary to positively ensure payment of compensation to the heirs by October 26. Justice Jawwad S Khawaja warned the secretary to keep in mind the consequences if he did not implement the court order.
Appearing on notice, the interior secretary requested the court to grant some time for paying compensation to the heirs of missing persons. The court grilled the secretary for not implementing the court order and directed him to ensure the payment of compensation.
During the hearing, Colonel Ali of Frontier Corps produced before the court Haroon Khan, son of Ghulam Muhammad. He said Khan was produced before the Judicial Inquiry Commission for recovery of missing persons, where he got his statement recorded.
While expressing its concern over not paying of compensation on the last hearing, the Supreme Court had summoned the interior secretary on October 21.
The court had also referred the cases of four missing persons, including Attiqur Rehman, Dr Abdi Sharif, Mansoor Ahmed and Abdul Karim Mehmood to the Judicial Inquiry Commission on missing persons.
