Journalists have to be law abiding citizens in the first place, as they cannot criticise lawbreakers until they do not follow laws themselves, opined speakers at a seminar titled ‘Practical Media’ on Thursday. The seminar was organised by students of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) Mass Communication Department. Professor Saleem Mughal, Azadi Fateh Burfat, Seemi Naghmana, Qazi Asif and Prof Inayat Leghari addressed the seminar, where a large number of students and teachers were present.
The speakers stressed on the need to revamp the educational system, as the present curriculum instils biased views among the younger generation.
Citing the example of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar’s polarised stance on ‘Khilafat’, they said it was a dilemma that lessons about Atatürk and Jauhar were included in the same book and students were asked to consider both personalities as heroes. “There is a dire need to make the syllabus more practical, to assist students in entering journalism after four years of university education and not just as interns. The media can play a positive role in guiding the world to the right direction.” The speakers also appreciated the efforts of FUUAST in facilitating students with latest media technologies and equipments.
