Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan on Wednesday said PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif was a “backstabber”, who was raising political slogans against the PPP leadership for political gains despite the fact that he had been able to return home from exile because of Benazir Bhutto’s political prudence. Lashing out at the PML-N for targeting President Asif Ali Zardari, the information minister said the character assassination of the “symbol of federation” could destabilise the democratic process in the country.
“The PPP leadership strongly believes in resolving all issues with political parties through dialogue under its policy of reconciliation. We believe that no one should be allowed to distort the image of any individual. Our leadership has strictly directed us to remain silent. We have sealed our lips but if anyone would attack our leadership, we would respond as silence cannot be observed in such circumstances,” the information minister said while addressing a hurriedly called press conference.
The minister urged Nawaz not to unleash a covert war in Sindh in the guise of sympathising with the flood-affected people of the province and urged him to adopt a political discourse to politically counter the PPP.
She is absolutely right. Nawaz Sharif is a backstabber. PPP should never have trusted him. After all, he is one of the gifts of Zia to this nation.
