Acting governor of Sate Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Yaseen Anwar tops the list of aspirants vying for the coveted position of central bank’s head, with an official announcement expected in a couple of days after approval by President Asif Ali Zardari. “The appointment of SBP governor will be made in a couple of days,” a source in the Presidency told Pakistan Today.
It has also been learnt that the Finance Ministry had recommended Anwar’s name for the position. However, it is for the president to make the final decision. Anwar and former SBP governors Ali Raza and Dr Shamshad Akhtar are reportedly in the race for the appointment that had to be made by October 18 (Tuesday), as the position is required to be filled within three months of falling vacant.
However, the government had previously also delayed the appointment almost for a week when former governor Shahid Kardar was given the charge to head the central bank. Anwar was given the charge of acting governor when Kardar resigned on July 19 after developing differences with the president.
