After showing much leniency with legislators holding fake degrees, the Election Commission (EC) now seems to be adopting a friendly attitude with lawmakers who have not submitted the statements of their assets and liabilities.
The last date for submitting the statements was September 30, which was extended for another 15 days however 200 lawmakers have not yet filed the details of their assets.
“There are more than 200 lawmakers who did not submit the details of their assets, which is a mandatory requirement under section 42A of the Representation of People Act, 1976, and section 25A of the Senate Election Act 1975,” said a senior EC official wishing not be named.
According to the rules, the membership of legislators who fail to submit their assets details during the prescribed period should be cancelled.
About six cases of lawmakers with fake degrees are lying pending with the EC for the last one year. A scrutiny committee of the EC had referred those cases to the commission for sending them to the police to take action.
