US Ambassador Cameron Munter on Monday called on Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar to chalk out the agenda for the forthcoming visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Islamabad, who is making a crucial trip to Pakistan this week to normalise strained bilateral ties and discuss with Pakistani leaders the prospects of peace talks with the powerful Taliban-linked Haqqani Network.
Ambassador Munter discussed in detail the issues to be discussed during Clinton’s visit, scheduled for October 20-21 and Foreign Minister Hina Khar talked about Pakistan’s areas of interest likely to be taken up for discussions during the talks to be held between Clinton and Pakistan’s civilian and military leaders.
“Munter also discussed the prospects of US peace talks with the Haqqani Network in his meeting with the foreign minister and this issue will be at the top of Clinton’s talks with Pakistani leaders,” said a diplomatic source, requesting anonymity. He said the US ambassador also discussed the agendas for upcoming international conferences in Istanbul and Bonn on Afghanistan.
