Govt committed to eradicate poverty: PM

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that the government of Pakistan regards poverty as a daunting challenge and is committed to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially the one dealing with eradication of poverty. He said this in his message on the occasion of International Day for Eradication of Poverty being observed on Monday (October 17). The prime minister said, “International Day for the Eradication of Poverty being observed today around the globe draws our attention to the phenomenon of poverty having implications for the socio-economic development of states and societies.”
“It also highlights the problems and predicaments faced by the poor and raises awareness of the need to eradicate poverty in all its forms and manifestations,” he added.
Gilani said, the selection of this year’s theme “Working together out of poverty”, underscored the importance of forming partnership approach and spearheading global effort to get rid of poverty.
“It raises awareness about the plight of the poor and fosters discussions on employment of anti-poverty strategies,” he added.
He said further the Millennium Development Goals reaffirmed the international community’s resolve to eradicate poverty.
He said the absence of an equitable economic structure in a society provided conducive environment for various social crimes to thrive, adding, the role of poverty in promoting these negative forces needs to be acknowledged.

Hows this for an idea Mr. PM for even beginning to tackle poverty in Pakistan – you and all your cronies starting with our fine president bring back all the stolen money you have in foreign accounts, invest it in industry and education in Pakistan, give back your feudal lands to the state so that the local farmers don't have to break their backs to fill your pockets and stop placing your best corrupt friends in top positions – that would be a start!
