Poultry industry in the country is producing 10.71 billion table-eggs per annum, whereas annual egg consumption per person in Pakistan is around 55 to 60 eggs, that is far below the annual consumption of 300 eggs per person suggested by the experts. “Efforts should be made to make people cognizant of the fact that egg is a complete diet. Increased egg consumption will lead to good health since only a healthy generation can take a country to the pinnacle of progress and prosperity”, said Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) Northern Zone Chairman Arshad Hanif.
He was addressing a news conference at Lahore Press Club on Friday. The event was organised by PPA in connection with the ‘World Egg Day’. He said, “PPA is observing this day by organising seminars at different places to create awareness among the general public about the nutritional facts of egg and its importance in human diet”. He underscored that there is a need to understand that egg has the best kind of proteins, vitamins and minerals. PPA claimed that poultry sector, one of the most organised sectors among all agro-based sectors, has been serving the nation since 1962 and providing affordable poultry products to the masses to fulfill the domestic requirements of animal protein. Poultry at present contributes 40 per cent of the total meat consumption and generates employment and income for about 1.5 million people.
