White Cane Day: People with impaired vision rally for peace, rights

Scores of people with impaired vision took part in a walk for peace and prosperity in the country while marking the International White Cane Day here on Saturday. Another aim of the event was to highlight the issues of blind people. Dozens of people with impaired vision including children, students and adults participated in the walk jointly organised by an NGO called Bibi and Babu (BB) and the Directorate of Special Education.
Carrying white canes in their hands, the people with disability marched from the National Press Club to China Chowk. They raised slogans for peace in the country. They demanded the government should launch a campaign to impart education to the people in general and drivers in particular regarding rights of the blind people. The walk was led by Naila Rubi and Abdul Manan. Earlier, the NGO held a special function at the National Press Club where it distributed dozens of white canes among the participants.
The International White Cane Day is a global event held falling on October 15. It is marked to promote public awareness and remind people about the rights of people with disability, especially the blind people.
