Acclaimed Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and her film ‘Saving Face’ have been short listed for a nomination in the category of Best Documentary, Short Subject for the prestigious Academy Awards (Oscars). ‘Saving Face’ chronicles the work of a British Pakistani plastic surgeon, Dr Mohammad Jawad who aids victims of acid attacks in Pakistan. The film, directed by Chinoy and co-directed by Daniel Jung, has been short listed as one of the eight documentaries from across the globe for the Best Documentary, Short Subject as announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. ‘Saving Face’ is set to air on America’s premier television cable network HBO, in March 2012. ‘Saving Face’ was filmed entirely in Pakistan in the Seraiki belt as well as in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Islamabad and its outskirts.
Speaking about this international achievement, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy said: “It still hasn’t quite sunk in that ‘Saving Face’ has been short listed for an Oscar nomination. It is a huge honour for me and a tremendous feeling to know that this film, based in Pakistan, has been appreciated and acknowledge by a global jury. My co-director Daniel Junge and I are now keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that the short listing turns into a nomination come January 24th!”
In the documentary, Chinoy constantly seeks to set a new standard for cinema that furthers the art of nonfiction storytelling in Pakistan. With a formidable list of awards under her belt including a coveted Emmy Award for her film ‘Pakistan’s Taliban Generation’, Chinoy’s eponymous film company has garnered a reputation for producing content that extends boundaries and challenges audiences. From following the lives of child suicide bombers in ‘Pakistan’s Taliban Generation’ to bringing to light the plight of Iraqi refugees in ‘Iraq: The Lost Generation’, her films continue to highlight the voices of marginalised communities around the world. Now her recently launched production company intends to groom a new generation of directors, producers and writers who will be equipped with the skills and training to produce quality films for the Pakistani as well as the international audience. Sharmeen Obaid Films is currently editing ‘Taboo Beauty’, a film about the transgender community in Pakistan for Channel 4, UK.

  1. To everyone who thinks it makes pakistan 'look bad' is seeing the glass as abysmally half full.

she's actually done something pretty brave and pretty worthy. the purpose of such documentaries is not to tell the world what a sucky place pakistan is, the purpose of any documentary is to highlight social issues. through this, pakistan's problems gain international recognition. pakistanis need to ACCEPT that these problems exist instead of complaining that someone pointed out that they do.

    • don't we need "Pakistani people's" attention to tackle these issues? Why do we in and out of Pakistan have accepted it as a standard to gain international attention to our problems for their resolutions?

I see no hope for nations who cannot even give respect to their women without some "International Aid"!

  2. I feel, we should be proud of her but at the same time, I request all the film makers to show the positive side of Pakistan, I agree with the gentle man, why the west encourage the dark side of our country, you can easily find , they are just waiting for the negative side. No doubt about that, she has done a wonderful work. but show the world we have more positive point as any one can have…..

    • Honesty and truthfulness are the greatest attributes of a living nation and believe me, only these are the one , who earn a bit of respect in the free world .

    • Mullah Qadri and ilks are the great patriots of the citadel of Islam. You need to watch Aaloo Anday on youtube!

  3. I am glad to hear that Sharmeen's documentary is been nominated in OSCARS, the most prestigious awards, we watch this award ceremony for years but this time we will watch it with great honor…As a Pakistani i wish that she will win the award…

  4. Thats a great news in a society where everything bad and God sent punishment is the only topic for all.

  5. Issure are there, but it is the body of a particular work which gets to be nominated by Oscar. If an issue is brought forword it gets to be debated and people get to know two sides of the story. Also, it will help others to bring out taboo in our socity. It is educational for sure when it is debated openly.

  6. VERY proud of you Sharmeen!! As the Aussies say “Good on you!”Love the fact that you are also going to mentor others to follow your trodden path!!Every good wish for you from us Down Under!

  7. Bravo! A daughter of the soil has made us all proud. This called educating the masses. We dont even acknowledge the evils she has pointed. Such are the Pakistani's who redeem the rest.
