Japan’s Kohei Uchimura won a record third straight men’s all-around title at the world gymnastics championships in Tokyo Friday.
The 22-year-old collected 93.631 points with Germany’s Philipp Boy second on 90.530. Japan’s Koji Yamamura finished third on 90.255.
No man or woman had previously won the all-around title three times in a row at the world championships.
Uchimura, who has dominated world gymnastics since finishing second in the all-around at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, led the elite group of top qualifiers in five of the six events. In 2010, he became only the third gymnast to have won the men’s world all-around title twice in a row. Petar Sumi won in 1922 and 1926 for Yugoslavia and China’s Yang Wei followed him in 2006 and 2007.
