Societies could not be understood without having deep understanding of their literature, former Chairperson Department of Literatures and Languages of Beaconhouse National University (BNU) Dr Ira Hassan said during the launch of the second volume of ‘The Maya Tree’, Liberal Arts Review, BNU’s first peer-reviewed academic journal. Literature loving people, teachers and parents of the shining students were also a part of the occasion held at one of Lahore’s poetic epicenters, Faiz Ghar. The event consisted of addresses by the chief guest, Dr Ira Hassan, honoured keynote speaker Ilona Yusuf; and also a poetry and prose jam by the BNU students. The publication is envisioned, designed and managed by a student-based council. The Maya Tree Council of BNU’s Department of Liberal Arts published the second volume after the success of the first one. The council members said ‘The Maya Tree’ is supported by an innovative course module, which ensures extensive faculty oversight and guidance. They added that through extensive short-listing, blind peer review, conferencing and editing processes, the journal aims to showcase and translate into critical discourse the best creative and research-based work generated at the university and progressively, across the country.
