US Special Representative Ambassador Marc Grossman met President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and also Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani during his day-long visit to Pakistan.
Grossman reaffirmed the US commitment to a long-term, enduring partnership with Pakistan. “We agreed that we can continue, in a systematic way, to find shared issues that we share with Pakistan – and there are many – and act jointly on them,” he said, according to a US Embassy release issued after his meetings with Pakistani leadership.
Grossman noted that his travel which included stops in Central Asia, China, India, and Turkey, urged upon the international community to work together to support a stable and secure Afghanistan inside a stable and secure region. He said the relationship between the US and Pakistan was important for both countries.
A PM House official said that Prime Minister Gilani told the US official that the relationship between Pakistan and the US must go beyond coordination on counter-terrorism. The meeting focused on the Pak-US ties with special reference to Afghanistan and the current regional and international issues.
Prime Minister Gilani expressed resolve of his government and the people of Pakistan to fight out extremism and terrorism in their totality. Both the sides agreed to pursue bilateral cooperation in the field of trade, water and power and infrastructure.
