The Unification Bloc has advised Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to dissolve the provincial assembly in order to block Senate elections.
Talking to a private TV channel, the parliamentary leader of the Unification Bloc Dr. Tahir Ali Javed said that Punjab Assembly was the largest provincial assembly of nation, having 48 Unification Bloc members. He added that if the provincial government dissolved the provincial assembly prior to Senate elections, the Unification Bloc would fully support the move.
“PML-N would have to take aggressive steps, in order to block PPP’s inroads into senate, prior to Senate elections. Dissolving the provincial assembly is the only such solution,” he maintained, adding that such as step would help block PPP’s majority in Senate elections.
However sources at PML-N have categorically rejected mulling or deciding any such move, citing party’s prudent and responsible attitude.
Sharifs have sent out a feeler to test ground for this course of action. This is not a democratic approach. Senate elections should be held as provided in the Constitution. If PPP gets majority, so be it. Trying to subvert it will amount to worst rigging.
