Amidst the continuing Pakistan-US tension and threats to the national security in the wake of the current geo-political situation, top military commanders would brief parliamentarians on security issues at the GHQ on Thursday.
According to sources, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence and the Defence Cabinet Committee have been invited to the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence scheduled to be held at the GHQ. The parliamentarians would get a briefing from the chief of army staff and the ISI director general on the current Pak-US relationship in the backdrop of the announced US withdrawal from Afghanistan, the sources added.
Relations with Afghanistan in the context of action against terrorists at the bordering areas of the two neighbouring countries would also be discussed in the meeting. Parliamentarians would also be briefed on the India-Afghanistan strategic agreement. The meeting carries more significance as it would be held at a time when the Pak-US tension is reaching its climax.
Senator Jehangir Ashraf Qazi and MNA Azra Fazal Pechuhu are leading the standing committees on defence of the Senate and National Assembly, respectively.
