Hostile overseas elements are bent upon disturbing peace in Karachi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik reiterated on Saturday.
The interior minister has blamed “foreign elements” for creating trouble not only in Karachi but other parts of the country as well many times before.
“Karachi is our life-line and we cannot tolerate any conspiracy against the economic hub of the country,” he said while speaking to members of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI).
“There is a need for unity among all segments of the society including businessmen and politicians,” he said.
The minister pointed out that the situation in Karachi has improved considerably but there is still room for more efforts to ensure peace in the city. “Our president and prime minister have fully endorsed our efforts to bring peace in Karachi and allocated Rs 5 billion for restoring law and order in the city,” he added.
Malik said that he will visit the city every week to monitor the law and order situation.
He assured industrialists that a separate police force would be formed to maintain law and order in the industrial zones of the country. “Even private security agencies can be hired in collaboration with the industrial associations to provide security to industrial zones.”
The interior minister said that police managed to arrest 87 target killers in recent months and took indiscriminate action. “Over 20 million mobile phones SIMs were traced that were either stolen or misused by their owners. We are also in touch with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to curb the misuse of SIMs.”
Responding to a question, he said that it was vision of Benazir Bhutto that all political parties are united to bring stability in the larger interest of the country.
Answering another query, he said that no political party will be allowed to stage rallies without the permission
The minister also said that the government respects the judiciary and would implement its decisions.
To a question about the operations in Karachi, the interior minister said that a zero-tolerance approach has been adopted and the government has also taken the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Awami National Party into confidence for this purpose.
“But at the same time, we also expect full cooperation from the business community to get rid of those involved in extortion,” he added.
KATI Chairman Ehteshamuddin also spoke during the meeting and highlighted the problems being faced by the business community. Sindh Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Khan was also present on the occasion.

  1. I think we just tend to berate and ridicule Rehman Malik forever he says. Though I seriously despise this guy, still I agree that certainly there are foreign elements that do take advantage of the mess created by ourselves.
