The 6th anniversary of 8th October earthquake was observed in Azad Kashmir and Islamabad on Saturday.
The day started with special prayers at Azad Jammu and Kashmir University for the souls of the martyrs of the earthquake as well as progress and prosperity of Pakistan. One-minute silence was observed at 8.52 am to pay homage to the victims during which the traffic came to a standstill.
A collective prayer was held at University ground Muzaffarabad and floral wreath was laid at the monument of the martyrs. Azad Kashmir flag was hoisted at half mast in all the public buildings of the state.
Functions and seminars were arranged all over Azad Kashmir to pay tribute to Pakistan Armed Forces‚ government,people of Pakistan‚ National and international NGOs for their unprecedented contribution for relief‚ rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the quake hit areas of Azad Kashmir.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani visited Muzaffarabd to show solidarity with the victims and lay a foundation stone of seven development projects of Azad Kashmir.
The PM also inaugurated the first medical college of Azad Kashmir, Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Muzaffarabad.
NDMA was a established Immediately after this earthquake to meet such challenges in future in a scientific way. The chaos and panic created by this earthquake throughout Pakistan was unbelievable. In fact Pakistan had no organisation (except Armed Forces) to meet such disasters in a planned way. Most of the area affected by the earthquake was hilly area and not easily accessible. All the communication links were destroyed by the earthquake which made the rehabilitation work more difficult. Supply of aid like food, medicine and shelter got delayed. Due to the blockage of roads due to landsliding and prevailing cold weather
Immediately after the earthquake world community was generous enough to provide all kinds of help in cash and kind. Pakistani government assured the affected people that complete rehabilitation work will be completed in four years but it is really sad that people are still living in camps, students are studying in open schools without proper building and injured are still looking for a proper treatment. Millions of dollars received for the rehabilitation of earthquake victims were swallowed by our corrupt leaders and administrators.
