Can facebooking save people from dengue?

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday formally launched the Punjab government’s Facebook page at University of Lahore to promote public awareness for the eradication of dengue.
The Facebook page was titled ‘Shahbaz Sharif Anti-dengue Community’ through which people, especially students, would be mobilised in the campaign against dengue. The Facebook page outlines the preventive measures that can be taken against dengue and the steps taken by the Punjab government against this menace. Elected representatives, head of Indonesian medical team, teachers, doctors and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

He said awareness campaigns for the eradication of dengue was continuing vigorously, and encouraged the youth’s participation. He said the youth, which was a precious asset and the guarantee of a bright future for Pakistan, was playing a vanguard role in the war against dengue.
He said through Facebook, more useful information would be available to the entire community, which would then be able to participate in the drive against dengue. He said dengue was found everywhere, in houses, parks, government offices, shops and the efforts of the government for its eradication would prove fruitful only if society as a whole took an active part in this campaign.
He said Indonesia had been fighting dengue for the last 50 years; Sri Lanka for 30 years and Thailand for half a century, while Pakistan had encountered this disease for the first time five years ago. He said the Punjab government had been making determined efforts against it from the very beginning, and everything humanly possible was being done to cope with the challenge. He expressed the hope that with the grace of Allah Almighty and the tireless efforts of elected representatives, institutions concerned and all segments of society, the problem would be overcome in a shorter period than in other countries. Addressing the ceremony, the head of the Indonesian technical team, Dr Rita, stressed the need for collective efforts to control dengue. She also appreciated the steps of the Punjab government in this regard. She added that launching the Facebook page by the students of University of Lahore was a commendable step, which would help promote public awareness against dengue in an effective manner. So much for your good governance, Mr CM!

Lahore: Citizens of Lahore terming the ‘Dengue Mukao-Sukh Pao’ campaign a complete failure, urged Chief Minister Shabaz Sharif to immediately stop this “drama”, which was aimed at getting cheap popularity. They claimed that the spray being carried out in various localities of the city was ineffective and useless. Quoting medical experts, citizens said that the spray material was adulterated which instead of killing mosquitoes helped their growth. They said that dengue mosquitoes would be eliminated automatically by the end of November and all efforts made to overcome it would go waste. APP
