The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has committed to restore Pakistan’s sovereignty and promised an end to power cuts within six months of coming into power. JI chief Munawar Hassan, while presenting his party’s election manifesto, said his party would rid the country of American slavery, dependence on IMF, corruption and power cuts and would build the five major dams within 10 years to overcome power and water shortage, evolve interest-free economy, dissolve all jageers (estates) and distribute the land among tillers.
He also promised “100 percent literacy with Urdu as a medium of instruction.” Opposing terrorism in principle, the JI would eliminate the culture of extortion, abductions and assassinations, he said, adding that the rights of the provinces, especially of Balochistan, on their resources would be respected. The manifesto also promised an effort to get the Kashmir issue resolved.
