The Jammat-e-Islami (JI) demanded on Wednesday an immediate release of funds for the Lowari tunnel project to restart construction work, threatening to hold protests including long march otherwise.
JI leader Siraj-ul-Haq was speaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club. He said that the allotted money of Rs 4 billion had been transferred to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s constituencies in Multan and Larkana, depriving the people of Chitral of their rights. “If this government was people friendly and was loyal with the people, they would not transfer the rights of one area’s people to others”, he added.
He said that under the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA)’s government, more than 40 percent work had been done on the Lowari tunnel but when the government changed, the construction work was stopped after only 5 percent construction.
