Uzbekistan, Pakistan agree to promote defence ties

Uzbek Defence Minister Diev Kabul Raimovich reassured his Pakistani counterpart Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar on Tuesday of his country’s pledge to promote bilateral ties in defence with Pakistan. The meeting was held in the Ministry of Defence and both officials discussed in detail the situation in Afghanistan, said an official handout. Both Pakistan and Uzbekistan face similar security challenges due to evolving situation in Afghanistan.
It was stressed upon to meet more frequently to share and understand each other’s perspective to achieve a common policy objective and coordinated response so as to safeguard their respective national interests. It was acknowledged that Pakistan had offered the shortest sea route to Uzbek goods through Gawadar and Karachi ports.
Pakistan was also amongst the first three countries to open embassy in Tashkent in June 1992. Mukhtar thanked the Uzbek Military leadership for supporting Pakistan’s bid for full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The Uzbek defence minister would also hold meetings with other officials till October 7.
