Mall Road turned a battleground near the Lahore High Court, owing to the massive protest against the death sentence of Mumtaz Qadri, the self-confessed murderer of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer. Violent protestors attacked the policemen with stones and bottles, injuring several. Thousands of protestors from Sunni Tehreek rallied from Data Darbar to the LHC, while bearing sticks. As soon as the mob tried to go beyond the LHC, police baton-charged, tear-gassed and even aerial-fired to halt the protestors’ progress.
Around 2,000 protestors hijacked almost half of the The Mall, causing problems for the commuters and traders. Shops at The Mall and its adjoining roads were closed. Protestors stole the bottles from a truck parked nearby and attacked the policemen. Protestors had started to gather outside Data Darbar Chowk early morning to move to the LHC. Protestors blamed the policemen for starting the clash. Several policemen and protestors were injured in the clash. The brawl reached at its peak around 2:30pm when thousands of policemen were deployed to control the situation. Protestors were demanding the immediate release of Mumtaz Qadri and vowed to continue the protests until their demands were met. Additional police force was also called to cope with the situation. Policemen and protestors were also seen bleeding. An eyewitness told Pakistan Today that the protestors hit the policemen with sticks. He said the area looked like a combat zone and it was one of the most violent protests at The Mall. Traders said they were irked by routine protests and load shedding. They said it was unfortunate that police could not stop these sorts of protests despite the imposition of Section 144 at The Mall. According to the police, protestors were allowed a sit-in outside the LHC, however as soon as they tried to advance, police tackled them by force. Traffic was clogged on the roads connecting The Mall. School students also suffered due to the clash between the police and the protestors, as the time of the protest clashed with the schools’ closing time. Students had to reach homes by foot as no vehicle was allowed in the area.
