Wajid Durrani, the Sindh inspector general of police, is all set to be appointed the new chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and a formal announcement is likely to be made by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat today (Saturday). A source told Pakistan Today that Durrani would be notified the new IB director general as the incumbent chief, Javed Noor, would retire on October 2.
He had assumed the responsibility on May 17, 2009 and would stand retired after attaining superannuation. Durrani was one of the main accused nominated by Ghinwa Bhutto in the murder of her spouse Mir Murtaza Bhutto near his Clifton residence in September 1996. Durrani is considered a close confidant of President Asif Ali Zardari. The Sindh High Court had accepted the petition filed against acquittal of Durrani and other police officials in Mir Murtaza Bhutto’s murder case on April 21, 2011.
On Friday, Noor paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, which was followed by a quiet meeting between Wajid Durrani and the prime minister.
