The federal government on Saturday failed to avert strike by teachers after talks between the office bearers of Federal Government College Teachers Association (FGCTA) and a two-member government delegation proved fruitless.
The two-member government delegation comprising PPP Senator Dr Saeeda Iqbal and Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) Director General Atif Kiani had a meeting with the office bearers of FGCTA at F/7-2 College for convincing them to withdraw their call to observe complete boycott of classes from Monday (tomorrow).
“The government delegation sought one week’s time from teachers for settling their promotion matter. However, the teachers refused to call off their strike and reiterated that they would boycott classes from Monday,” said Professor Tahir Mahmood, an office bearer of FGCTA.
To a query, he said that during the meeting, the FDE DG told the teachers that a summary for their promotion had been sent to the Finance Ministry. When the teachers asked him to produce something in black and white in that regard, he failed to do so, said Professor Tahir.
It is relevant to note here that around 1,500 college teachers associated with FDE have been protesting for the last two weeks for their promotions in line with the announcement made by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on October 8, 2010.
Meanwhile, around 150 teachers staged a demonstration in front of Federal Government College F/10 to press the government for their promotion under time scale formula.
