Scores of activists and workers of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Pakistan Islamabad and Islamic Students Federation on Saturday blocked the main IJ Principal Road for an hour at Faizabad in protest against the death sentence awarded to Mumtaz Qadri in former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer’s murder case.
The protesters belonging to various religious seminaries, led by Hafiz Muhammad Idrees and Maulana Muhammad Aslam Jalali, were holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans in favour of Mumtaz Qadri. They burnt tyres and blocked the road, suspending traffic for about an hour. The protesters demanded the government release Mumtaz Qadri at once.
The protest caused a great inconvenience to the commuters and, especially to patients, as the road was blocked and traffic of all kinds was suspended.
The enraged protesters warned the government that if Mumtaz Qadri was not released, they would be left with no option but to launch countrywide rallies and strikes. They also asked the government to implement the law of Tahaffuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat in the country. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

  1. Mumtaz Qadri’s death sentence will cause a greatest law and order bad situation in Pakistan. So higher authorities should avoid from capital punishment in this case.

  2. Death Sentence in this case will cause a worst situation for law and order in Pakistan. In my opinion this capital punishment in this case is totally wrong verdict. Higher authorities of Pakistan should try to find another solution for this case.

  3. The murder of Salman Taseer was a tragedy for Pakistan. Not just because a a good man was killed, but also because so many "religious" people applauded this assassination. All the lawyers who protested the dictatorship of Pervez Musharraf, acting as the defenders of the rule of law, were all of a sudden cheering on this murderer and signing on to defend him in court. For shame.

Qadri should be punished to the fullest extent of the law — which, in Pakistan, means the death penalty. It's funny how religious conservatives are all of a sudden against the death penalty when it involves own of their own.

  4. @Muhammad Usman — It is precisely to defend the rule of law in Pakistan that Qadri should be put to death. The rule of law is not upheld by tiptoeing around the issue and bending to the will of extremists, even if they are violent and even if they happen to be large in number.

  5. iqbal what say you about the rule of law that was being challege by Taseer in most vulgar manner. why couldnt he let the court proceed to determine whether asia was guilty of blasphemy or not?why these double standarards regarding the "rule of law" when it comes to a minister or a constable?for shame. so message once again is taseers and minsiters are above the rule of law and the reactionary vigilantism woul be ealt with swiftly. what farce.

    • if Taseer was guilty of blasphemy then there is blasphemy law in this country why not use it and why let a retarded man to be a tool.

      • common man enforcing a law is not a good idea.but what else do you expect when your governor oversteps the law?your govt stays mum then how else would you see this ending?how is that different from Qadri handing out a verdict. the contempt these governors of democratic system show for the people they serve is astounding.
