The Sindh government will soon introduce Geographical Information System (GIS) to keep a close watch over the entire province from Karachi, with special emphasis on activities of criminals and performance of government officials.
All administrative departments have been asked to provide information for preparing PC-I of the GIS project, being developed by the Sindh Information Technology (IT) Department.
This was disclosed at a meeting presided over by Adviser to Chief Minister on IT Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh held at the Sindh Secretariat recently. Secretaries of all provincial departments attended the meeting.
In the meeting, the secretaries were asked to submit detailed information within two weeks of their departmental offices in districts, tehsils and union councils. After which the PC-I of the project will be carried out and presented to the Sindh Planning and Development Department for formal approval.
It was said that GIS is the most advance monitoring system in the world and will be very helpful for the poor people of the province. “The whole province can be monitored from its capital,” it was stated at the meeting.
At the meeting, it was claimed that the system will help to keep an eye on the activities of extremists, outlaws and monitor the performance of government. “GIS will enhance the performance of government departments and make them effective.”
A GIS integrates hardware, software and data for managing, analysing and displaying all forms of geographically-referenced information. GIS also allows users to view, interpret and visualise data in many ways revealing patterns and trends in form of maps, reports and charts. The user is assisted by GIS to answer questions and solve problems by looking at collected data.
For the past two years, the GIS project had been on the backburner with the government. Recently, efforts to introduce the system have picked up as it can help authorities to monitor disasters and other incidents across the province from the Sindh Secretariat in Karachi.
