‘Submit report on accident in 10 days’

Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Ijazul Ahsan on Friday gave the Punjab government 10 days to submit a report on a petition, requesting registration of an FIR against people responsible for the tragic accident of a student bus in Kalar Kahar. Ahsan also directed implementation of the criteria laid down in the Punjab Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 and Motor Vehicle Rules 1969. The judge was hearing an application filed by Azhar Siddique in his already pending petition on the identical matter, seeking implementation of pubic transport laws. Ahsan said that the court would pass a verdict, which would ensure that people traveling on public transport were safe and ordered that vehicles that had not passed the fitness certificate would not be allowed to come on roads. The petitioner submitted that the criteria laid down in the Punjab Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 and Motor Vehicle Rules 1969 was not being followed by the transporter mafia and the provincial transport department, which was causing tragic accidents. The petitioner requested the court to constitute a judicial commission or a high-powered committee to probe into reasons of the tragic accident. He said the judicial commission should examine percentage of the defective vehicles plying on roads and pass recommendations for necessary amendments in the statutory laws.
