Pakistan on Wednesday said that the Haqqani network had been created by the United States and that it has nothing to do with the militant group. Abdullah Hussain Haroon, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, while talking to an Indian news channel said Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar had candidly told the world that mutual trust could help to eliminate terrorism and that it was as much Pakistan’s fight as it was for the rest of the world.
He said Pakistan had been suffering from terrorism and that its sacrifices were unmatched by any other country in the world. He said the US was blaming Pakistan for supporting the Haqqani network, while it had created the group in the 1980s to fight the Soviet forces in Afghanistan. He added that Haqqani leaders were accorded red-carpet welcome at the White House. As a reference, Hussain played an NDTV video clip on his cell phone that showed US President Ronald Reagan warmly hosting Jalaluddin Haqqani.
