A group of lawyers thrashed two motorway police inspectors in front of the courtroom of Lahore High Court Justice Abdul Waheed Khan on Thursday for confiscating a lawyer’s car on motorway and imposing a fine for violations of traffic rules.
The traffic police officials, Inspector Asad Abbas and Sub Inspector Sadaqat, were waiting outside the court to appear before the judge in the petition filed by Rafique against them for impounding his car on motorway the other day.
Rafique and his fellow lawyers had a grudge against the police officials for issuing a ticket of Rs 200 for over-speeding on motorway and confiscating Rafique’s car on the alleged violation.
Rafique filed habeas corpus petition in LHC against the motorway police officials and when the police officials reached the court to attend the proceedings, Rafique and ten other lawyers publicly thrashed them. They torn down police officers’ uniforms and dragged them in front of the court room.
On Wednesday night, when the police officials came to know about the filing of a petition, they approached the lawyers and succeeded in making reconciliation after apologising to Rafique in the presence of Punjab Bar Council vice president. However, Rafique and his fellows asked the police officials to attend the court proceedings on Thursday where they would finally withdraw the case against them.
Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) President Asghar Ali Gill had intervened in the fight and took the police officials to his office and managed their medical treatment. The president managed a compromise between the lawyers and the policemen and escorted them to the main gate of the LHC.
Rafique had filed the petition in the court accusing the police officials of illegally confiscating his car and the court had deputed bailiff to recover the car who reported that no car of the petitioner was confiscated. At this Justice Abdul Waheed Khan disposed of the petition and directed the petitioner lawyer to approach the police and give application if he was right in his allegation against the motorway police.
