‘Efforts needed for protection of children’s rights’

A group of NGOs have collaborated to promote Child Rights Movement (CRM) in Punjab to tackle the widespread violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of children. The NGO representatives, during the inception meeting of CRM Punjab Chapter on Wednesday, said the movement could not be initiated without the active participation of the civil society. The meeting was attended by a number of organisations working on child rights issues including SPARC, Sahil, Sanjog, SPO, Pahchaan, SOS Children Village, Bunyad Foundation, Global Vision Organisation, Aaghaz Foundation, SHARP, AHRC, WWHL, REHEL, JWO, TAP and GODH. SPARC is currently hosting the secretariat of CRM at national level but after the 18th Amendment, children’s issues have become a provincial subject. Thus, SPARC realised that to make efforts more specific by the involvement of likeminded organisations working on child rights, a provincial chapter of CRM could be introduced. The CRM would focus on establishing a Provincial Commission on Child Rights, Free and Compulsory Education Bill, putting child domestic labour in banned occupation schedule under Employment of Children Action (Amended) 2011.
