The Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) in its general council meeting elected its office bearers and Munawar Baseer got elected as president. The elections seemed initially to be strongly contested by the incumbent panel of Ch. Nouraiz Shakoor Khan , Syed Shahid Ali Shah and Idris Haider Khawaja. Long deliberations were carried out by the general body which had full representation from all the affiliated units, namely the four provinces, WAPDA, Army, SSGC and Railways.
A full panel for all the positions was proposed by WAPDA Secretary Sports Khalid Khan and seconded by SSGC Sports General Manger, Col (R) Raashid Ahmed. The panel received a total of 12 votes from the 15 nominated and eligible votes of the units and provinces. When the panels were proposed, the result was clearly in favor of Munawar Baseer’s panel. Consequently the election commission and president declared the full panel of Munawar Baseer as victorious. The entire proceedings lasted from 11:00am to about 4:00pm, and were monitored by representatives of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Abdul Khalique Khan (secretary) and Lt. Col. (R) Zafar Ahmed and National Federation Director, Pakistan Sports Board Mr. Azam Dar along with the two lawyers nominated by the President. It is interesting to note that this is the first time in the history of the PCF that full elections have been held and democratically contested. While thanking the incumbent president and secretary general and the full house, Munawar Baseer stated that change in all spheres is essential, and the new leadership of PCF would bring about positive change for the good of cycling and would support the affiliated bodies and the cyclists by all possible means. He reiterated his vision and plan to promote cycling vigorously, both at national and international level, and assured the house of working with all affiliated bodies in a cordial manner and on a consensus basis. The meeting ended with a vote of appreciation and thanks to Ch. Nouraiz Shakoor and Idris Haider Khawaja for his services to cycling over the past 20 years.
