The government has ensured transparency in the utilisation of Rs 21 billion relief and rehabilitation package for the flood survivors.
Talking to different delegations at his office on Monday, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said no less than 8 million people have been affected and are mainly from 13 of the worst-hit districts of the province.
Other districts have also had to face the aftermath of the recent rains and the consequent floods, Memon added.
The minister said President Asif Ali Zardari is personally monitoring the relief and rehabilitation work in the province.
In its relief camps for the flood survivors, the Sindh government has made maximum possible efforts for provision of proper food and potable water as well as for hygiene and sanitation, he added.
As for prevention of dengue fever, he said the provincial government is making every effort for regular fumigation across the province.
“Equal attention is being paid to raise public awareness about the methods to prevent the disease and also its proper management,” he added.
Memon said the recent rains and floods have damaged crops spread over 2.1 million acres, and water continues to stand in many of these areas.
“Coordinated efforts are being made to dewater the land, followed by steps to expedite the rehabilitation work,” he added.
He said besides food and non-food items, the flood survivors are also being provided financial assistance as part of the government’s plan of early rehabilitation of the affected people.
He appealed to non-governmental organisations, philanthropists and international donor agencies to assist the Sindh government in their hour of need.
