As the military top brass held a brainstorming session on Sunday to find ways to deal with the situation after US accusations of Pakistan’s clandestine support for terrorist outfits, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also called a number of the country’s political leaders to take them into confidence regarding the standoff with the US and decided to convene an all-parties conference (APC) after his talks with them.
Political leaders pledged their unconditional support to Prime Minister Gilani in sending a clear message to the US that all political forces were united in the face of any outside aggression. The prime minister also called President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Foreign Affairs Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was also urgently called back to the country from the US to brief political leaders on the current state of Pakistan-US relations.
Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman also called on Gilani and assured their full support. The political leadership of the country had welcomed the initiative of Prime Minister Gilani to hold a political parties’ meeting soon to apprise them of the security situation in the wake of threats “emanating from outside the country”, said a press release issued by Gilani’s office.
No date has been fixed for the APC yet, but Online news agency quoted its sources as saying it could be announced in a day or two. The leaders contacted by the prime minister were PML-Nawaz President Nawaz Sharif, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Syed Munawwar Hassan and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.
JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman later called on Gilani and discussed the political situation in the country. Welcoming Gilani’s decision to take political leaders into confidence, Fazl said his party would support the government on the issue of national security and that national unity was the need of the hour. The prime minister also called JUP President Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair, Jamiat-e-Mashaykh Pakistan chief Pir Fazal-e-Haq, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Fazal Kareem and Secretary General Haji Muhammad Hanif Tayyab.
The leaders supported the prime minister’s step of convening the meeting in the wake of the security situation and assured the government of their complete cooperation. Separately, Gilani told Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar to forcefully project Pakistan’s point of view at the UN General Assembly meeting on Tuesday.
“Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani twice spoke to Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and directed her to forcefully project Pakistan’s point of view in the General Assembly on the 27th of September and return to Pakistan immediately after delivering her speech at the UN General Assembly,” a Prime Minister’s House spokesman said in a press release on Sunday.
