Europe gained an unexpected ‘free’ point when American Cristie Kerr was forced to pull out of the Solheim Cup on Sunday at Killeen Castle in Ireland with an injured wrist.
The scores were tied at 8-all overnight, with the USA needing six points from the 12 singles to retain the Cup and Europe requiring 6 ½ to regain it for the first time since 2003. Kerr, the world No.3, had been due to play Karen Stupples in the final match of the 12 singles but withdrew suffering from tendonitis in her right wrist.
The rules state that she forfeits the point. She tried to warm up on the practice range, but was totally distraught when she had to walk off in severe pain. “I’m devastated that I can’t play and help my team,” said the 33-year-old, who was in floods of tears. “I tried my best but I couldn’t hold the golf club.”
Stupples, who has not won a point in two Solheim Cups, was equally upset. “I had an inkling on the putting green that she might not be playing because her caddie cam over said he was sorry,” said the English golfer. “But I’m gutted for her and gutted for me. I was ready to play and I think we would have had a fantastic game.”
Rosie Jones, the USA Captain, admitted they had been concerned about Kerr on Friday morning, although she did go on to play her in all the foursomes and fourballs on the first two days.
“She started on anti-inflammatory on Friday night and felt better,” said Jones. “The wrist is just due to fatigue and it is too painful.”
Alison Nicholas, the European Captain, added: “It’s devastating for both players. I had no idea Cristie was injured and I’m really sorry for her.”
