It was observed that fruit and vegetable prices increased in Sunday bazaars, while the price of chicken decreased. In vegetables, the prices of onions, ginger, garlic, tomatoes, potatoes and spinach increased, while in fruits, the prices of apples, bananas, pomegranate and grapes increased.
The prices of onions and tomatoes increased by Rs 4 per kg each, and were subsequently sold at Rs 32 per kg, and Rs 50 per kg, respectively. Potatoes were sold at Rs 34 per kg following a Rs 2 per kg increase, while garlic was sold for Rs 90 per kg, following a Rs 10 per kg increase in price. The prices of chicken decreased further and was sold for Rs 155 per kg in Sunday bazaars.
Chicken vendors said they were buying chicken at lower rates because of increased chicken production at poultry farms. “The price of chicken has decreased over the past three weeks,” said Ahmed Hussain, a chicken vendor. Customers complained about the lack of cleanliness in Sunday bazaars and demanded the city district government take immediate notice. They said the administration was giving all attention to Model bazaars and was ignoring Sunday bazaars altogether. They said the management should also keep a strict eye on Sunday bazaars and facilitate customers.
“Last week, I visited Township Model bazaar and it was excellently maintained. The stalls were clean, set up in a systemised manner, and the monitoring system was very good. However, this week I visited the Green Town Sunday bazaar and it was in an abysmal condition,” said Tehmina Shamim, a housewife, adding that the management should keep a strong eye on the cleanliness of Sunday bazaars.
