Public sector universities employees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Friday observed a complete strike against university administration and government for not approving the raise in their salaries and announced a suspension of all academic activities for an indefinite period. Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) KP chapter had called for complete strike after a three-day deadline to government and university administrations expired on Thursday evening.
Academic and non-academic activities at all four public sector universities, adjacent colleges and schools existing on the premises of the Peshawar University campus and in other parts of the province remained suspended. Protesting teachers led by FAPUASA Central Prof Dr Fida Mohammad and Provincial President Dr Johar Ali took out a rally inside the campus premises. The rally started from the Teachers’ Community Centre (TCC) and after passing through different departments in turned into a protest in front of the main Peshawar University administration block.
The rally was also attended by Engineering University Teachers’ Association (EUTA) President Prof. Sidiq, and Islamia College University Teachers’ Association President Prof Zaiullah Sehrahi along with the presidents and general secretaries of Class-III-IV, associations participated. Protesting teachers criticised the government for not issuing funds to cover the 15 percent increase in salaries announced by the government.
